Even Maximus is not above the rules.
Actor Russell Crowe and his girlfriend Britney Theriot were refused entry to an Australian restaurant for not complying with the smart-casual dress code, according to a report.
The couple went to dinner at Mr. Miyagi, a Japanese fusion establishment in Melbourne, in outfits in which they played tennis earlier in the day, but staff were quick to refuse them entry.
“He (Russell) went there with a brand new Ralph Lauren polo after just playing a game of tennis and got rejected,” Crowe’s manager Grant Vandenberg told the Daily Mail Australia.
The restaurant described itself as “casual but chic” where “workwear, activewear, singlets, and thongs (flip flops)” are prohibited.
Mr. Miyagi’s management doubled down on their decision to kick out the Gladiator star, saying no one is above their rules.
“We treat everyone the same. It doesn’t matter who you are or whether you are Russell Crowe. We have a dress code that we enforce at every level,” owner Kristian Klein told The Herald Sun.
“We are consistent with it and I don’t feel it is unreasonable. Small continued. “But I personally know that if I’m in my flip flops (flip flops) and my boardies (shorts) I’m not going to try to go to a nice restaurant because I wouldn’t be dressed appropriately.”
Klein said the member of staff who refused Crowe’s entry did not know who the Robin Hood actor was, a “very unfortunate situation for everyone”.
Mr. Miyagi had some fun with the situation and updated the dress policy on Instagram.
“Dress smart casual, unless you’re Russell Crowe, wear whatever,” the sign read.
The restaurant also turned to Crowe and cleared the air.
“Dear Russell, On your last visit it seems we got off to a bad start. After thinking long and hard about what happened, we have permanently changed our dress code,” the caption read. “We look forward to seeing you again in the future, you are always welcome at Mr. Miyagi.”
Radio broadcaster Steve Price and his girlfriend were evicted from the restaurant a few days later for breaking the dress code, according to the Daily Mail.
Crowe, who began dating Theriot in November 2020, joins the list of recent A-listers who got the boot from eateries.
Talk show host James Corden was banned from Keith McNally’s restaurant Balthazar in Manhattan in October 2022 after allegedly assaulting the restaurant’s employees.
Other stars who have taken the boot of establishments include Ariana Grande of a California donut shop after she was caught by a surveillance camera licking some unattended pastries.
